The Fire of Desire to Go Higher

In Tantra, desire is not part of the problem, rather, it’s the source of the solution. For it was the desire of the universe to become you. That’s not just any desire. It’s considered to be the primordial desire of the vast, eternal essence of all that is, to know itself. 

To know itself it needed to create a reflection of itself. Just as your eyes have never seen your own face. You need to look into a mirror to see what you look like. Or better yet, just get into a committed relationship and try to stay there! Guaranteed you’ll see more than you ever cared to see about yourself. Your partner will reflect back to you every little hiding shadow part of you. But then that’s the gift of a conscious, spiritual relationship. Through a committed and loving reflection from the outside, you get to see yourself from the inside. 

The key component of this cosmic story is that the universe limited itself to become you to know itself for the sheer delight of it. From the Tantric tradition, life isn’t supposed to be a dirge, it’s a dance. Of course, life feels like a dirge sometimes. Everyone gets overwhelmed by the struggles of life from time to time. But long term, if you feel anything less than joy -- as in, overworked, overwhelmed, undernourished, bored, anxious, or depressed, then it could be that you’re trying too hard. Letting go is in order. 

It’s usually never about having desires, but perhaps not desiring deeply enough. 

Sometimes if you’re out of touch with what your heart most deeply desires, or what lights you up in life, then you lose your sense of direction, your sense of purpose. 

This is part of the purpose of our practice. We need to quiet the mind and listen to the heart to hear the very faint whisper of the universe calling us to align with that which we most desire, to set appropriate self-boundaries, and come home to ourselves again.
