Radical Transformation: The Roaring Silence of Consciousness

Snow-covered forest with tall, bare trees. Sunlight filters through branches, casting long shadows on the snow-laden ground. Serene mood.

While cross country skiing the other day, I stopped on the trail in the middle of the forest to admire the spectacular beauty. No one was around. It was just me, the trees, the sun, sky, a light wind, and a thick blanket of snow covering the ground. The cold fresh pine scent of the air filled my lungs with vitality. It was so still. Everything stopped. Everything was silent.

Yet, in the silence, I could hear a faint, steady, high-pitched sound way off in the distance. Simultaneously, the same sound was vibrating through the trees, and inside my ears. The sound permeated everything, filling me with an extraordinary peace. It seemed as though this sound was arising out of the silence, becoming like a thread of light connecting everything together as one singular vibration!

Often in deep meditative states, I can hear a high-pitched sound that pulses. It’s called “anahata nada” or the unstruck sound. Maybe you’ve experienced this too? It’s a profound, subtle inner sound representing the primordial vibration of the universe. This sound is unproduced and ever-present; only heard in the quiet presence of a calm mind. It acts as a bridge to higher states of consciousness and is considered the “music of existence” or the “celestial sound.”

When you really tune into the silence, it’s not a faint sound at all. In fact, at times I describe it as roaring silence, like the sound of a massive waterfall.

Silence is so needed in today’s busy and loud world. No matter where you go, perhaps except for the deep forest, you’re bombarded by noise and chaotic, agitating, sound vibrations. These vibrations wear on the subtle body and can create stress and exhaustion in the physical body.

Silence has a therapeutic healing effect on the body-mind. It provides the serene space of all experience to be received, felt, assimilated, and digested. There’s a deep wisdom that arises out of the silence that is constantly guiding and protecting us.

During our Sadhana practices this month, we’ll explore our relationship to silence and the power it has to transform our lives. We’ll take a deeper dive into the powerful expansion of silence that wraps itself around all things. When you focus your attention on the silence, you gradually begin to hear the roar of grace that empowers you to permit the radical transformation of your body, mind, and heart.

Waterfall cascading with force against a backdrop of lush green trees. A bridge is visible above, creating a serene yet powerful scene.

Join me every Tuesday and Thursday morning this month in sadhana, to refine your ability to listen to the silence and be filled with a profound and much needed inner peace and calm. If you’re not already a member, get 14-days FREE when you join for your first month. Or just drop into a class at any time.

I hope to see you on the mat.

Namaste,

Todd
