The Meditation Adventure: Curiosity, Dedication, and Surrender

The inner journey of yoga, meditation, is an adventure. We go within to explore the far reaches of the mind and consciousness, never quite knowing what we'll discover. Like any adventurer, we need curiosity, an open heart, and a willingness to follow the path wherever it leads.
Recently, I joined Hallie on one of her nest-watch outings. She monitors four Eastern Bluebird nest boxes along a trail near the foot of a mountain as part of the Berkshire Natural Resource Council. After checking the boxes, we decided to continue hiking up the mountain.
It was a beautiful day, but we had no idea where the trail would lead. We followed the markers for a couple of miles until we saw a sign pointing toward a vista. Excited, we followed it—but found no vista. Still, we kept climbing.
The mountain seemed much taller than I had imagined, hidden behind a thick forest. As the trail grew steeper, I began to wonder if the vista even existed. I was sweating, tired, and doubtful, but we continued on.
Finally, we arrived.
We stepped into a clearing with an outcropping of rocks, a simple bench, and a breathtaking view of mountains and valleys stretching into the distance. The climb had been challenging, but the view was worth every step. We sat on the bench, meditated for a while, and softened into the beauty surrounding us.

Meditation is much the same.
We follow the signs inward, repeating the mantra with minimal effort, then surrendering and letting go. We never know if—or when—we'll arrive at a beautiful inner vista.
Sometimes meditation feels vast and expansive. Other times it feels like being caught in a mind-storm. Either way, the practice is not to judge the experience as good or bad, but simply to allow it to be what it is. A valuable lesson for life itself.
And sometimes, in meditation, you arrive.
There's a clearing. A bench where your tired soul can rest. With an open heart and a spirit of surrender, you glimpse the beauty of life—the perfection of your journey and the wisdom hidden within your experiences. Gratitude arises naturally as you recognize the miracle of simply being here.
In those moments, we experience Ananda—bliss, joy, and contentment. Everything feels aligned. Not because life is perfect, but because we stop resisting what is. We become whole and complete with the present moment, perfectly imperfect as it is.
The only thing standing between us and this peace is resistance: wishing something had not happened or longing for something that has not yet come.
Resistance pulls us away from the Self and into regret, sadness, resentment, guilt, or shame.
The Self asks for our cooperation, our longing, and our willingness to keep going, even when the path is steep and the destination unseen. Yet when we stay the course, there is always a view waiting for us—one that can change our life and make every step worthwhile.

Meditation is the inward journey of the Self. I invite you to join me. Be curious. Be adventurous. Follow your heart and trust the path. You never know what breathtaking vista awaits within.
